Visual Analysis
W131 Reading, Writing, and Inquiry I

Goal: To understand how a visual document communicates through images, patterns, parts, and text to convey a message or meaning.

Features:
• A summary of the image that allows readers to know the image more closely.
• The context of the image as it contributes to the conversation, controversies, or considerations surrounding the image. (author’s trends)
• An interpretation is apparent in a weighted thesis.
• Support for interpretations through evidence from the image and sometimes other sources.

Process:
1. Begin with an image.
2. List observations and data from the visual (individually then open for discussion).
3. Annotate image as an alternate to the list.
4. Develop assumptions, inferences, and scenarios (individually then open for discussion).
5. Propose a thesis in a weighted sentence form (beginning with a subordinating conjunction)
Although the stereotypical view of the never-ending poverty and hopelessness of the Appalachian community exists, the grace and beauty is evident in the people’s lives.

Selection of an image:
• It should suit the demands of the assignment and the length.
• Have an interest in the subject/topic.
• Be willing to look further than the image itself.
• Write a proposal explaining your selection and submit with a copy of the image. (no duplicate images)

Evaluation:
• Context of the visual (when and where did it exist) historical relevance
• Weighted thesis with initial perception and underlying message
• Observation that include details, facts, patterns pertinent to the visual
• Assumption that include inferences and patterns with a consideration of audience
• Documentation in MLA form with image and other source material used
• Fluency and organization of ideas
